Julia's Banana Bread, Maui, Hawaii is the best in the planet

Julia's Banana Bread, Maui, Hawaii is the best in the planet

Near the Kahakuloa village deep inside Maui, Hawaii, lies Julia's Best Banana Bread shop. This banana bread has been called the "best banana bread in the planet" by many who have come this way before us. So, we had to see, or rather, taste it to know for sure.

On a fine winter morning in Maui, we set off on Kahekili Highway on the north west of Maui. Kahekili Highway is known for its many one-lane parts along cliff sides, which makes it a rather dangerous road to drive. After stopping at attractions such as the Nakalele Blowhole, with its fifty feet high water jets, we came to the roadside "Pink shop", which, as you can imagine, is painted a pretty shade of pink all over. Just a few hundred feet ahead from the Pink shop, as the road starts to climb into another dreaded one-lane cliff-hugging portion, we came across Julia's Best Banana Bread shop.

The shop turned out to be a tree house, painted a bright shade of green. For all of five dollars, you could taste this planet's best banana bread. After a mouthful, I realized that this must be the biggest bargain in Maui, for it was undoubtedly the best banana bread I have ever eaten, and by miles. This particular sample was quite yummy, with a delectable crust, soft and juicy in the interior, vaguely reminiscent of the sweet moist aroma of Maui rain forests, and, I surmised, there was perhaps a hint of rum. You can feel it as it makes it way around your tongue, setting it afire with all those indescribable tastes.

This surely was food heaven!

We entered our names in the visitor's logbook, hoping that someday we will trace our path back there, and find our names. Energized by the banana bread, and the assurance from Julia that "the worst road is over, it just gets better from here on", we climbed up the one-lane road up to Kahakuloa Head.

As we climbed up, and as the delectable taste of the banana bread created its magic in our veins, we considered driving back to the shop to get one or more banana breads. But, given how bad the road looked from Kahakuloa Head, it had to wait for another time.

So, if you are driving that way, please don't forget to pick up a banana bread for us from Julia's Best Banana Bread shop.
