Kverkfjöll, Iceland - one of the hidden glaciers

Chances are you haven't been to Kverkfjoll, even if you have been to Iceland. Its yet another glacier spilling out of the big Vatnajokull ice cap, and a little bit away from the main Ring Road of Iceland. That is what keeps Kverkfjoll a bit off the tourist map.

We didn't know about it either. But, as we were traveling on Ring Road towards Hofn, a distant but amazing sight caught our eye. It was a cloudburst in the distance, against the backdrop of what surely was another glacier. The sunlight filtering in through the clouds was golden. We had to stop by the road and admire the scenery unfolding before us.

So, that is how we took a dirt road a few miles from the Ring Road to arrive at Kverkfjoll.

As we stood at the base of the Kverkfjöll glacier, we couldn't help but feel like we had been transported to another world. The towering walls of ice and rock rose up on either side, creating a narrow and winding passage that led deeper into the heart of the glacier.

Kverkfjöll is one of Iceland's hidden glaciers, tucked away in the rugged interior of the country. Getting there is no small feat, requiring a long and bumpy drive on unpaved road and a challenging hike through rough terrain. But for those willing to make the journey, the reward is an unforgettable adventure that few ever get to experience.

Finally, we reached the base of the glacier. Here, the true scale of Kverkfjöll became apparent. Towering walls of ice and rock rose up on either side of us, stretching hundreds of feet into the air.

But for all the challenges, the beauty of Kverkfjöll made it all worth it. As we made our way back to the car, we couldn't help but feel a sense of gratitude for having been able to witness such a remarkable natural wonder. Kverkfjöll may be hidden away in the remote interior of Iceland, but for those willing to make the journey, it is a destination that is well worth the effort.
